What to expect and what to wear
If this is your first treatment with AB sports therapy or first time receiving sports massage or injury treatment this page will hopefully give you a better understanding of what to expect from your treatment session. It is recommended that you start with the initial consultation. The reason for this is to give you and the sports therapist a better understanding of what is causing or caused the problem. The initial consultation includes a health questionnaire, posture analysis, functional and injury assessment. Please be aware that the Initial consultation and treatment session will take up to 60 minutes. If you feel that you need someone to come along with you, I understand your concerns and please feel free to have chaperone present while treatment is taking place.
Consultation and Health Questionnaire
The consultation and health questionnaire is taking history about your health concerns, past or resent injuries, medical conditions, lifestyle, work, sport and hobbies and eliminates contra-indications to treatment. This also helps the sports therapist to build up a picture of what maybe of caused or causing the problem or injury. It is also used to protect the therapist and client by eliminating the contra-indications problems which may stop the treatment from taking place or the client being referred to their GP or another healthcare professional including physiotherapists or osteopaths.
Referrals
Referrals are not uncommon practice and there is nothing to worry about, this is done in the best interest of the client to receive a treatment that the sports therapist is not qualified or experience to treat.
Posture Analysis
Posture analysis is evaluation of standing posture which is viewed from the front, side and the back. The sports therapist looks at the alignment of the joints in the body within the ideal posture. Ideal posture is based on an imaginary line down the centre of the body from head to toe. The assessment helps to identify musculoskeletal and postural imbalances within the body.
Posture analysis is evaluated by:
• Curves of the spine
• Height of the shoulders
• Level of the shoulders and shoulder blades
• Head tilt
• Level of the pelvis
• Position of the knees
• Arches and position of the feet
Functional assessment
Functional assessment is used to view how the body moves through the planes of motion and function. This gives a view of underlying problems and imbalances that maybe contributing to the injury or problem.
Injury assessment
Injury assessments are carried out which include special tests, joint range of motion tests and strength tests to help diagnosis the injury and severity of the injury.
Treatment Planning
Once initial consultation is finish the next step is to set out a tailored sports massage / sports therapy treatment plan to suit you.
What Is Best To Wear
The ideal clothing to wear during the postural analysis for men is just a pair of shorts and for women shorts and a sports bra. Reason for this amount of clothing is that the posture is easily hidden under loose fitting clothing and does not give a true picture of underlining postural problems which cannot be seen. The ideal clothing to wear for sports massage and sports therapy treatments is loose fitted sports clothing like shorts and t-shirts and not compression suits or shorts. Women may need to undo their bras during back massages and back treatments and your therapist is trained to respect your dignity by using towel techniques to cover you during the treatment sessions.
Sports Massage & Sports Therapy
During sports massage and sports therapy treatments the client is required to sit or lay in different positions on the massage couch. During the treatment you may be ask to move and change position. Before the treatment begins the client may be asked to perform a series of assessments which may include a standing balance tests, lunge, squat, step-up, foot posture test, slump test and leg length test. This is to investigate the root cause of the problem or injury and to consider other areas of the musculoskeletal system that may be linked to the present complaint and help build a treatment plan. The sports therapist applies sports massage and sports therapy techniques with their hands, knuckles, fingers and elbows. Good communication skills between client and therapist are always used. Please remember some muscle soreness may be felt afterwards and this is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. The soreness usually disappears within a few days after the treatment.
